Family-Based Immigration

Chicago Immigration Lawyers Representing You & Your Family

At Buchmiller Immigration, LLC, we understand the importance of family and the difficulties a family can face while handling complex immigration matters. Our Chicago immigration attorneys work tirelessly to help Cook County families with all of their immigration needs.

In the United States, citizens and lawful permanent residents (LPRs) are able to sponsor certain members of their family for green cards. These visas will grant your foreign family members permanent residency in the U.S. The process of applying for these kinds of family visas is extremely complex and requires the skill of an experienced lawyer. The team at Buchmiller Immigration, LLC can navigate you through this process.

Do you need assistance with a family-based visa? If so, contact our firm today at (773) 830-3363.

Family Visas

There are two types of family-based immigrant visas: Immediate relative immigrant visas and family preference immigrant visas. These two categories are further divided into specific visas that apply to certain types of family members.

Immediate Relative Immigrant Visas include:

  • IR-1: The spouse of a U.S. citizen
  • IR-2: The unmarried child under 21 years of age of a U.S. citizen
  • IR-3: An orphan adopted abroad by a U.S. citizen
  • IR-4: An orphan to be adopted in the U.S. by a U.S. citizen
  • IR-5: The parent of a U.S. Citizen who is at least 21 years old

The visa you are eligible for depends on your relationship with the U.S. citizen you are related to. There is an unlimited number of immediate relative visas available each year.

Family Preference Immigrant visas include:

  • F1: The unmarried children of a U.S. citizen and their minor children
  • F2: The spouses, minor children, and unmarried children over age 21 of LPRs
  • F3: The married children of U.S. citizens and their spouses and minor children
  • F4: The brothers and sisters of U.S. citizens over age 21 and their spouses and minor children

These visas are for individuals with a more distant familial relationship with a U.S. citizen or some LPRs. There is a limited number of these kinds of visas available every year.
